Leading Change: The Economic Value of Retaining and Expanding a Vital Health Care Economy

The Economic Value of Retaining and Expanding a Vital Health Care Economy
Craig Baarson, Reimbursement and Practice Management Analyst, Minnesota Department of Health
Scott Marquardt, MPA, CEDFP, Director, Montevideo Economic Development Authority
David  Nelson, MBA, Regional Extension Educator, Community Economics, University of Minnesota Extension Service

Mr. Baarson and Mr. Nelson described Minnesota Rural Health Works, a program that provides a snapshot of the economic impact of the health care sector in individual communities or specific geographic areas.  This information is vital in helping communities plan for their future health care needs.

Mr. Marquardt discussed the economic impact of the health care sector in the Chippewa County-Montevideo Hospital Market Area.  He reviewed the area’s background and demographics and the direct economic impact of the health care sector, as was identified through the Minnesota Rural Health Works Program. Mr. Marquardt emphasized that the health care sector is critical to the local economy for a number of reasons, including business retention, expansion and recruitment.   Mr. Marquardt recommended addressing the issue by engaging multiple sectors of a community.
