Leading Change: Consumer-Driven Health Care

Consumer-Driven Health Care
Nancy Feldman, President and Chief Executive Officer, UCare Minnesota
Lawrence J. Massa, Chief Executive Officer, Rice Memorial Hospital

Ms. Feldman discussed the development and characteristics of consumer driven health plans, which offer a high deductible health insurance plan paired with a personal health savings account.  She outlined the plans’ benefits, including greater cost control and potential for savings, and potential drawbacks, including the fact that the plans don’t address high cost cases that drive overall health care system costs.

Mr. Massa described Rice Memorial Hospital, a community-owned hospital which aims to create a “functional and efficient facility that supports staff in providing a healing environment for patients and families”.  He presented detailed information on the redesign of staff areas, patient rooms, and public spaces.
