Leading Change: Creating Sustainable Partnerships in the Community
Creating Sustainable Partnerships in the Community Catharine Jordan, PhD, LP, Director, Children, Youth and Family Consortium, University of Minnesota Jerome Pedersen, DDS, Director, Hibbing Community Dental Clinic
Dr. Jordan outlined some of the key principles of creating healthy and sustainable community partnerships. Based upon her experiences with a community-based participatory research project, Dr. Jordan discussed ways in which groups can create healthy partnerships, including decision-making, understanding cultural differences, viewing all partners for their unique expertise and “sun-setting” a partnership when goals are met.
Dr. Pedersen discussed the Hibbing Community Dental Clinic, a partnership between the University of Minnesota and Hibbing Community College, which is a part of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system. The goals of this partnership are to provide excellent clinical training for oral health practitioners, help address oral health care needs of underserved patients, and increase the long-term supply of dentists in greater Minnesota. Dr. Pedersen outlined the benefits and challenges of the collaboration.
