Leading Change: E-health as a Solution

E-health as a Solution
Kristen Loncorich, Supervisor, Healthcare Quality Information Program, MDH
Tom Major, Healthcare Quality Information Program, MDH
Robert A. Petzel, MD, VA Midwest Health Care Network, Department of Veterans Affairs

Mr. Major and Ms. Loncorich presented information on the National and Minnesota e-Health Initiatives.  National calls for action to establish Electronic Health Records (EHRs) have prompted action nationwide.  The Minnesota e-Health Initiative is a public-private collaboration designed to accelerate the use of Health Information Technology in all areas of the state.  Its purpose is to improve health and health care quality, increase patient safety, reduce health care costs, and improve public health.

Dr. Petzel discussed the Veteran’s Administration (VA) Hospital’s movement toward person-centered and person-controlled health care, with the goal of getting patients to better care for themselves, stay healthy, and seek services when they need them. A critical part of this movement is empowering patients with knowledge, for which the VA developed My Healthe Vet, an electronic medical record.  My Healthe Vet provides information such as strategies to improve health and reduce risk, services, record access, primary care coordination, messaging, health care beyond eHealth, and transactions.
