Leading Change: Update from the Minnesota Department of Health

Commissioner Mandernach identified four important themes:  1) Minnesota’s population is both rapidly aging and becoming more diverse; 2) better use of technology (e-health, telemedicine, online learning, etc.) can help us get our work done while ensuring safe and high quality health care; 3) collaboration among sectors including health care, the business community, academia, communities, etc., is vital—it’s clear we cannot survive without each other; and 4) innovation and change are no longer options.  Commissioner Mandernach reviewed what the Minnesota Department of Health is doing to address health professions workforce issues.  Minnesota Department of Health initiatives include a hospital grant programs, a Rural Health Advisory Committee, a loan forgiveness program, collaborations with the University of Minnesota, and the development of electronic health records.
