Question Four Responses

Center for Bioethics - University of Minnesota [pharmaceuticals]

Purchasing organs in the US is illegal, but there is strong evidence that organs bought overseas come from the poorest among those nations. Should health insurers or the medical community be responsible for the care of patients who come back from another country having purchased an organ?

137 people responded: 29% = YES    63% = NO    8% = UNSURE

Comments:
  • It depends; to save people's life is the priority duty.

  • No, its not health insurers fault if the law breaker gets sick.

  • I feel that people with money should not be able to purchase an organ.

  • No because it was illegal to get it in the first place.

  • No because the treatment was not approved by their medical insurance provider.

  • No, it promotes an illegal process for our country.

  • No, why should the US incur the costs from procedures considered illegal here? That simply promotes this behavior.

  • Yes, we take care of people who are in our country illegally and those who hurt themselves.

  • If you can buy an organ, pay for your own care.

  • Although ethics may say we in no way work to encourage the purchase of organs from other countries, I believe follow up medical care is essential. We cover follow up care for bad decisions such as drug use, risky behaviors that cause injury. Even foreign disease. It would be tough to draw the line and deny care for organ issues.

  • Yes people should not be punished for being desperate. Our organ donor system needs to be revamped.

  • I don't think insurance should pay for it but doctors should treat the patients.

  • If you pay for your healthcare they should cover you. Period.
