Research Summary
Design and Synthesis of HIV Protease Inhibitors
The approval of the first HIV protease inhibitors in early 1996 provided a continuous hope in the fight against HIV, the virus responsible for AIDS.
HIV protease is an enzyme critical to the life cycle of the virus and its inhibition distrupts viral replication, resulting in the formation of immature, noninfectious virus particles.
Shown on the right is the structure of the HIV protease enzyme, which requires two copies of the protein molecule (one shown in red, the other in white) for activity. The surface of the drug Indinavir is shown in green.
