The organization of the Center is highly focused on the integration of activities across the spectrum of product development, from translational research to clinical trial operations, lead by the Director, Bruce Blazar, M.D., and Co-Director John Wagner, M.D.
The Center for Translational Medicine consists of an integrated continuum and matrix of resources and services, with availability of entry for therapeutic development or services at any point in the continuum from basic research and discovery to clinical trials. The establishment of performance-based clinical development serves to drive the focus and accelerate the development of new therapies and greatly increase the number of clinical trials needed to advance medicine on a wide front.
The Center incorporates the broad development and GMP-manufacturing capabilities of Molecular and Cellular Therapeutics (MCT; directed by Dr. John Wagner), which enables advancements in cell-, protein-, small molecule- and tissue-based therapies, as well as the development of combination therapies. In addition, by leveraging the capabilities of MCT, the Center will retain proven capabilities in regulatory support for FDA submissions, expertise in acquiring grants and contracts and a well tested infrastructure with state of the art technology to support the manufacture of new biotech products. Utilizing these capabilities, the center will be able to support and enhance the University's ability to form alliances with industry and major research organizations with a common goal to foster growth and innovation in the biotech and biopharma arena, and develop private sources of funding for leading research.
