Bernhard Hering, M.D. is an internationally recognized leader in islet cell transplantation for the treatment of type 1 diabetes.  His contributions have been instrumental in the advancement of islet transplantation.  Dr. Hering has created one of the most dynamic islet allotransplant centers (the Diabetes Institute for Immunology and Transplantation (DIIT)), a world leader in the application of single donor islet transplantation.  In addition, under his direction, the DIIT has become one of the few programs in the world capable of consistently producing high quality porcine islets for xenotransplantation research.
