Facilities Services and Stewardship

There are several emerging areas of responsibility that now fall within the scope of services provided by the Office of Facilities and Capital Planning. These responsibilities are carried out largely through our partnerships with other key service providers across the University. Though partnering with Facilities Management has always been part of the work we do here, it has recently taken on a greater role as FM undergoes it’s transformation as a world class service organization.

BSL-3 Planning
The role of BSL-3 planning developed during the design and construction of three new BSL-3 Facilities within the AHC.  In collaboration with other groups from across the University, our office is providing leadership in the development of the operations and management model needed to run these facilities. Key stakeholders include proposed users, Department of Environmental Health and Safety, Facilities Management, Occupational Health, Capital Planning & Project Management.

Emergency Evacuation Planning
Our office has recently completed the creation of an emergency evacuation plan for each building in the AHC. Key contacts were established and emergency evacuation plans were developed across the AHC. The University’s Department of Emergency Management is responsible for the maintenance of these plans.

FM Partnership
Since the beginning, this office has endorsed a strong partnership with Facilities Management in order to ensure new and renovated facilities can be supported operationally. This has also allowed better coordination of all facilities projects across the AHC including those originating in individual departments. Close collaboration with FM has allowed thoughtful leveraging of capital, R&R and HEAPR allocations.

Safety and Security Coordination
The Office of Facilities and Capital Planning has recently received oversight of the safety and security monitors that keep the Academic Health Center safe.  Our office also provides leadership and facilitation to safety and security discussions as they pertain to facility and employee safety. Key stakeholders in this role are University Police, Department of Environmental Health & Safety, Research Building Services, Research Animal Resources, AHC Office of Communications, Classroom Services. Emergency Management, Department of Central Security, Fairview Security, Occupational Health, and Facilities Management.
