Associate Vice President for Research, Academic Health Center and Vice Dean for Research, Medical School The University of Minnesota Academic Health Center and Medical School invite applications and nominations for the newly combined position of Associate Vice President for Research in the Academic Health Center and Vice Dean for Research in the Medical School. This new position combines aspects of two previous positions and will be filled by an internal search. The successful candidate will be a University faculty member with a PhD and/or MD or other terminal professional degree and a record of productive research; effective leadership at the programmatic, departmental or collegiate level; and an interest in substantial administrative responsibility. This position is 100% effort; the salary augment for the position will depend upon qualifications. It will be possible to arrange for the individual to devote some effort to research, teaching, and/or clinical work. This position is responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership for the AHC’s and Medical School’s research programs and fostering interest in health research at the University and to external constituencies, with special attention to interdisciplinarity. Candidates should have a strong vision and extraordinary leadership skills, an ability to work in tandem with AHC and collegiate units, faculty, and central administration to define and promote the importance of health research to the core mission of a public research university, and a distinguished academic reputation. As Associate Vice President for Research in the Academic Health Center, this position reports to the Senior Vice President for Health Sciences and: - Leads the development of the strategic vision and work plan for health research in the AHC in collaboration with the Senior Vice President and AHC Deans Council
- Oversees AHC’s interdisciplinary research corridors and interdisciplinary centers (e.g., the Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute, BioMedical Genomics Center, Research Animal Resources, Molecular and Cellular Therapeutics, Masonic Cancer Center)
- Manages the AHC grants program (Seed, Faculty Research Development Grant, Translational Research Grants) and Minnesota Partnership for Biotechnology and Medical Genomics grant program
- Is responsible for research compliance oversight for AHC programs, including clinical research billing, the Embryonic Stem Cell and Human Embryo Research Oversight Committee, and PRF’s and REPA’s for shared AHC programs
- Is responsible for the AHC research space policy and procedure
- Chairs the AHC Council of Research Deans
- Represents the AHC at the Senate Research Committee, Council of Research Associate Deans, and Association of Academic Health Centers.
- Serves as member of the AHC Operations Group.
As Vice Dean for Research in the Medical School, this position reports to the Executive Vice Dean and: - Leads the development of the strategic vision and work plan for research for the Medical School in collaboration with the Executive Vice Dean and Dean
- Oversees Medical School research centers, cores, and programs (e.g., Center for Magnetic Resonance Research, Stem Cell Institute, Lillehei Heart Institute, Institute for Engineering in Medicine, Biomedical Image Processing Laboratory, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Facilities) and research events (e.g., Student Research Day)
- Is responsible for research compliance oversight within Medical School, including RPF’s, REPA’s (as assigned) and other activities delegated by the Executive Vice Dean (e.g., scientific misconduct, conflict of interest)
- Works with the Executive Vice Dean and Chief Administrative Officer to plan research space development and allocation. Represents the Executive Vice Dean at project planning and construction oversight meetings as assigned.
- Works to solve problems identified by the department heads and individual faculty as delegated by the Dean or Executive Vice Dean. Develops recommendations for recruitment and retention of research-intensive faculty.
- Manages MMF grants, bridge grants, and other medical school research funding
- Oversees the MD-PhD program and leads the Council of Directors of Graduate Studies
- Is responsible for the Medical School Research Committee
- Represents the Medical School at the Council of Research Associate Deans, AHC Council of Research Deans, the AAMC Group on Research Advancement and Development (GRAND)
- Serves as member of the Executive Vice Dean’s Operations Group
- Serves as a member of Dean’s Strategy Group.
The successful candidate must have: - An earned Ph.D. and/or MD or other terminal professional degree;
- A faculty appointment at the University of Minnesota with a strong preference for individuals in tenured faculty positions;
- A record of outstanding scholarship, productive research, and successful, consistent extramural grant support in the health sciences;
- Ability to articulate a strong vision for health research and the expertise to foster that vision through implementation;
- A record of effective, innovative, and collaborative leadership at the programmatic, departmental or collegiate level; evidence of effective collaboration and leadership in interdisciplinary health research;
- Interest in substantial administrative responsibility. Preference for individuals who have significant experience as an effective administrator and fiscal manager that includes supervision of staff in complex organizations within higher education;
- A strong commitment to academic excellence, outstanding service, and accountability;
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with diverse constituencies such as faculty, staff, students, other administrators, and other internal and external groups;
- Positive record of facilitating change;
- Demonstrated record of adopting and practicing principles of affirmative action and equal opportunity, and seeking to achieve diversity in the faculty and workforce.
The individual is appointed by the Senior Vice President for Health Sciences and the Executive Vice Dean of the Medical School. The salary for this position is commensurate with experience and qualifications and is negotiated with the appointing officials. This administrative appointment is annually renewable.
