Getting started towards a health career can start today. The Health Careers Center offers a variety of workshops and courses designed to meet the needs of students like you who are seeking to apply to a health professional program.

Take a Course

Wondering which health profession is a good fit for you? Register for the AHS 1101 or 1102 (online) one-credit course, where you take an interest inventory and develop a personalized action plan. If you are a freshman with a strong academic record, high ACT score and are thinking about becoming a physician, consider taking AHS 1601.

Attend a Workshop

Need to know more about a specific program?

Have a question? We’re here to help.

The Health Careers Center has the information for the different health care professional programs at the U of M. With qualified staff, we are able to help you get the information you need and answer your questions about the programs. Have a question that is not part of our frequently asked questions? Please contact us with your question. If we’re not able to answer it, we will find the person who can.

Online Workshop: Planning for Medical School

Thinking about applying to Medical School? Wondering about the process and what it will entail? Take this online workshop…it can be completed at your convenience and on your own time.

After you have completed the workshop, you can meet with a career consultant to talk about your action plan and next steps. Click here to learn more about the Planning for Medical School online workshop.

This workshop is now available to individuals outside of the University of Minnesota Twin Cities.

Gain Experience…Start Today!

Volunteering or working is a critical piece to your application to a health professional program. Some programs require that you have a level of knowledge of the profession, as well as showing initiative and drive towards your interest in the field. You can start that process today.

Even if you are not 100% certain what health profession you want to be in the future, start learning about different health professions and gaining experience today. Volunteer at an organization that works to maintain or better people’s health!

  • Explore the organization links for the groups from the Step Into Health Careers Fair . The hospitals, clinics, non-profits, and government agencies listed are looking for students like you!
  • Search for opportunities in the University’s GoldPASS system. After entering in your information, search through the various postings. Try various keyword searches with simple terms.
  • Work in a setting which employs different health care professionals. Read more about volunteering as you aim to pursue a health profession. There are many different organizations out there, so try connecting with one close to where you reside.

Join a Student Group!

Student groups are a great way to learn more about a different health profession. Many of the different health areas have a pre-health student group, filled with students who are just like you.  This is a great way to learn more about your dream profession and get connected with students who have a similar interest and career goal!

Look through both the Academic section and the Health and Wellness areas…you’re bound to find something that interests you! Search Student Groups now.
