Arc Greater Twin Cities is a grassroots advocacy organization dedicated to serving people with disabilities and their families. Intellectual and developmental disabilities include Down Syndrome, autism, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy and other related conditions. In 2007, the number of service contracts from parents, caregivers, adults with disabilities and professionals increased 15% over 2006 to more than 24,400.

Bolder Options

Build your resume and show your commitment to community by mentoring a Twin Cities youth. Bolder Options is an activity-based, one-to-one youth mentoring program that uses running and biking, academic goal setting, and volunteerism to build self-esteem and encourage healthy habits in 10-14 year old youth. Bolder Options seeks adult mentors willing to meet weekly for one year with one youth. Mentors and youth spend 2-4 hours a week together, doing things like running or biking, volunteering in the community, attending group activities and working on youth goals. Mentors must be at least 21 years old, have access to reliable transportation, and pass a screening process.

Care Partners recently celebrated their 25th year as a volunteer program supported by Children’s Cancer Research Fund of Minneapolis. Through our volunteers, Care Partners provides a variety of life programs and non-medical support services for pediatric and adult blood and marrow transplant patients, and pediatric oncology patients at the University of Minnesota Medical Center and University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital.

The Research Associate Program in the Emergency Department at Hennepin County Medical Center hosts medical students and undergraduates interested in medical careers to participate in data collection for academic research projects. As RAs, students are afforded the opportunity to interact with patients, observe the practice of Emergency Medicine, and learn some of the methodology of clinical research. All of the research projects undertaken by the department are aimed at improving patient outcomes. As such, RAs participate daily in the innovation of emergency medical practice.

HealthPartners Research Foundation (HPRF) is a 501c(3) non-profit foundation, dedicated to conducting high quality, public domain health research, within the greater HealthPartners organization. Research is directed by HealthPartners’ medical, dental, and mental health professionals in their particular field of expertise and interest, often in collaboration with other academic and research organizations throughout the world. To date, we have had 112 MD or DDS researchers who have served as Principle Investigator for at least one research project through our foundation, as well as 30 PhD researchers and 5 PharmD investigators. There are 12 MD/DDS and 14 PhDs currently on the core staff.

Lutheran Volunteer Corps

The Lutheran Volunteer Corps is a one-year, full-time domestic volunteer program that offers people a challenging year of personal exploration while working for social justice, living in intentional community, and practicing sustainable living. Volunteers are placed in full-time positions in non-profit organizations in 13 cities across the country. Volunteers receive a stipend to cover basic living and personal expenses, health insurance, and time off for retreats and vacation. The program begins in mid-August of each year. Application deadlines are January 15, March 13, and May 1.

The MN Department of Human Services, working with many others, helps people meet their basic needs so they can live in dignity and achieve their highest potential. The State Operated Services (SOS) Division is part of the MN Department of Human Services. SOS consists of an array of campus and community-based programs serving people with mental illness, developmental disabilities, chemical dependency and traumatic brain injury. Our organization includes a mental health inpatient treatment facility in Anoka and nine community behavioral health hospitals. Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) has built bridges and knocked down barriers for youngsters with neuro-muscular diseases by providing an unforgettable week at MDA summer camp. Campers say the week they spend at MDA summer camp is “the best week of the year!”

Pals on Paws is a therapy dog chapter of Therapy Dogs International (TDI). All of our visiting teams (dog/handler) have been certified through TDI. We visit nursing homes, hospitals and schools. It has been documented that therapy dogs do make a difference in people’s lives, medically and psychologically.
