Dr. Daniel Mulrooney appeared on the Sept. 8 KARE-11 Today Show.
Q: What are some of the challenges that cancer survivors may encounter after treatment for cancer?
Mulrooney: Survival rates continue to improve for children and adolescents diagnosed with cancer. Research has not only helped improve this outcome but is now also focusing on the effects childhood cancer survivors experience later in life as a result of their previous treatment. Adult survivors of childhood cancer are at risk for second cancers, early cardiovascular disease, disorders of growth and metabolism, and challenges with learning, thought, and memory.
- Cancer survivors can be at higher risk of developing other cancers and earlier cardiovascular problems
- Cancer survivors are also at higher risk for disorders of growth and metabolism and difficulties with thought and learning. Some patients who have chemotherapy as part of their cancer treatment may experience neuropathy, or a numbness or tingling sensation, in the hands and feet.
