News Capsules 10/15/09
October 15, 2009 NEWS CAPSULES is a biweekly newsletter for faculty, staff, and students of the Academic Health Center. Please send submissions to Emily Jensen at jense888@umn.edu. Jump to: News -- Headlines People Announcements -- Updates -- Opportunities -- Calendar -- Time Capsule As a public university, much of the U’s success depends on the support we enjoy from our community. It’s now time for us to pitch in and support the needs of our community.
For those of you who may be new to the University, every October we hold the Community Fund Drive, in which we come together to make a real impact on area health, human services, education, and environmental charitable causes. The goal this year is to raise $1.25 million for the region’s nonprofits. For those of you who have given before, the needs are greater this year because of the economy.
Here are the ways you can contribute: 1. Pick a charitable federation or from among the hundreds of charities that are part of the charitable federations. The list is at http://www1.umn.edu/cfd/. 2. Or, pick your own charity and write it in on the online form. 3. Have your 2010 gift deducted each pay period or in one lump sum from one of your paychecks.
I know that your household may be feeling the squeeze of the recession, and this year it seems we all know someone who has lost a job or who has a spouse without work. And I know we have all sacrificed a pay raise this year. But because we are fortunate to be working, I hope you will consider giving what you can. Even a small amount from each paycheck can make a real difference to our community when it is multiplied throughout our institution.
The final thought I’d like to leave you with is that volunteerism is good for your health. So take a look at the information on the Community Fund Drive Web site and sign up today to help. Let’s be proud to increase the AHC’s participation rates!
