U of M Professor, Director of Program in Human Sexuality Elected President of International Academy of Sex Research

Coleman Brings Over 28 Years of Experience to the Role

MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL (Aug. 17, 2007) — University of Minnesota professor Eli Coleman, Ph.D., was elected president of the International Academy of Sex Research (IASR) at the Academy’s 2007 annual meeting on Aug. 11. Coleman was elected from a pool of candidates which included well-known sex scientists from four countries around the globe.

Coleman is professor, endowed chair in sexual health, and director of the Program in Human Sexuality in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health. During his 28-year career at the Medical School, he has authored more than 130 articles and book chapters as well as eight edited books on a variety of sexual health topics. He is the founding and current editor of the International Journal of Sexual Health and is a founding coeditor of the International Journal of Transgenderism.

Each year the members of the IASR, a scientific society which promotes high standards of research and scholarship in the field of sexual behavior, elect a new president-elect to serve a three-year term: the first year as president-elect, the second year as president, and the third year as past-president.

Coleman brings ample experience with him to this position from past leadership roles with the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality, the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, and the World Association for Sexual Health.

His current research interests involve the study of compulsive sexual behavior, including developing a measurement scale, and investigating possible pharmacological treatments.
