Scientific Writing Development Series

In April 2008, the AHC Office of Clinical Research offered a scientific writing development series, consisting of four ninety-minute sessions. Materials from the sessions are as follows:

April 7: Manuscript writing principles
April 14: Abstract and introduction
April 21: Methods and results
April 28: Discussion and title

Content:
Over the four weeks, participants will be challenged to think critically about the content and organization of each sec­tion of the IMRAD-format article (introduction, methods, results, discussion, plus abstract and title). Workshops will be interactive, with exercises and group discussion framed by examples of good/bad writing. This workshop series is targeted to clinical researchers in the earlier stages of their ca­reers.

Presenter:
The series is led by Anne Marie Weber-Main, Ph.D., assistant professor of Family Medicine and Community Health. Dr. Weber-Main is a basic scientist with extensive experience as an editor and scientific writing coach for faculty in multiple disciplines. She teaches in the Medical School and School of Public Health on topics related to grant writing and writing for publication. She is also a national workshop leader for the American Medical Writers Association. Since 2005, she has served as the writing consultant for the University of Minnesota’s NIH K12 Roadmap program (CAPS).
