About the Competition

Interprofessional Team Case Competition: A Systems-Based Practice

  • Registration deadline January 24, 2009, for the Local and National Competitions
  • Registrations accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis
  • The registration fee is $2,000 per national team (does not include the University of Minnesota participants)

Team Composition and Rules

  • Four students per team
    ~ no more than two students from the same profession
  • Must represent at least two different professions:

    Health Care Administration
    Medicine
    Nursing
    Pharmacy
    Public Health
    any other medically-related field

  • Participants must be full time students at the institution they represent. Exceptions will be reviewed by the CLARION Executive Board on an individual basis. Requests for an exception must be submitted by January 24, 2009.
  • Retreat attendance is mandatory for every team member of the University of Minnesota Twin Cities and Duluth campuses. We recommend that each University host their own retreat to orientate participating students from your institution.  If you would like general information on how the U of M hosts this event please contact CLARION clarion@umn.edu.
  • In the case of a team member dropping out there will be no replacement.
  • Team members will share the entire prize as listed.

Case Details

The case will include elements from all professions listed above.
Topic: A profile of a patient's health care leading to a sentinel event
Content: The case is written by U of M faculty at the Academic Health Center

Presentation: Teams will have 20 minutes to present their case.

Mandatory Retreat- January 31, 2009
ALL registered U of M Twin Cities and Duluth students MUST attend.
Where: CHIP Lounge, East Bank of University of Minnesota, 1-425 Moos Tower, 515 Delaware St. SE, Minneapolis, MN
Time: 8:00am-12:00pm

U of M Local Case Competition - March 7, 2009

2008 schedule:
7:45 am – Judge briefing
8:30am – Team A presentation
9:15 am – Team B presentation
10:00 am – Team C presentation
10:45 am – Team D presentation
11:30 am – Team E presentation
12:15 pm – Lunch break
1:00 pm – Team F presentation
1:45 pm – Team G presentation
2:30 pm – Team H presentation
3:15 pm – Team I presentation
4:00 pm – Results tallied
Each team is given 20 minutes to present and 10 minutes for questions from the judges.  The judges will be given roughly 5 minutes to discuss each presentation before the next group begins.

    • Roles for students and advisors
    • Team definitions
    • Judging criteria
    • Contact information for additional questions
    • Technical assistance for team development

National Case Competition

National Case Competition - April 3 and 4, 2009

Participants are welcome to stay at the Radisson University Hotel, where a block of rooms has been reserved. When you call for reservations, state that you are a CLARION participant so you receive the group rate. Teams conduct a root cause analysis and present their recommendations for system changes to a panel of interprofessional judges.
