The Health Careers Center calendar includes workshops, information sessions, and fairs, to help students like you put your best foot forward when gearing up for a health professional program. These activities are designed for undergraduate students, to help with career exploration in health sciences careers. Partners across the Academic Health Center and the University of Minnesota undergraduate colleges design these programs based on students' needs. These activities provide access to the information for students, like you, to make an informed decision regarding your future health career path.

Gaining Experience for a Health Career
Learn about health-related volunteer, research, and other opportunities which will help you get ready for a health career. After this workshop, you will have a better idea of the kind of experience that will be best for you. Learn about great experiences in hospitals, clinics, community organizations, research labs, and even abroad!
Interviewing for Health Professional School
We will discuss what role the interview plays in admissions decisions and what the interview day is like. Learn about the interview process and how to prepare for a successful experience. We will discuss topics such as what to bring along, questions to ask, as well as questions to expect.
Writing a Winning Personal Statement for Health Professional School
Come prepared to start brainstorming and writing! In this active-learning workshop, learn general strategies including do's and don’ts for writing a personal statement to a health professional program. Find out what topics are generally included in personal statements, why they are used by admissions committees, and strategies for presenting yourself and your experience in the best way possible. Examples will be provided and discussed. After completing the workshop, you will receive a pass to return to the Health Careers Center for a 1:1 review of your personal statement. Begin the process today and don't wait!
A Physician's Life
This is where to start the exploration and decision-making process. We will discuss the role of physicians and changes ahead in the field of medicine, characteristics needed to be successful in medicine, the kind of commitment that's needed to be a doctor, the importance of teamwork in health care, and how to explore your interests in medicine. An overview of medical school and the training process will also be discussed. Future dates to be announced.
Preparing for Medical School
We begin with an overview of the kinds of candidates sought by medical schools, followed by an in-depth discussion of prerequisite courses, the MCAT, each of the components of the medical school application and how to prepare to be a strong applicant. (For more focused information on parts of the application process, please also see our additional specialized sessions on personal statements, interviewing for health professions, and applying to medical school).
NOTE: In this session, we will assume knowledge of the topics addressed in "A Physician's Life". The knowledge base it provides is an essential part of your preparation for medical school! Future dates to be announced.AMCAS: Applying to Medical School
Those of you submitting applications to medical school this summer may have questions about the AMCAS application process: from how to categorize your coursework on the form to establishing the best timetable for yourself and knowing how to plan for secondary (supplemental) application materials. We will review the entire application process and provide you with information on how to plan for a strong application. Dates in spring to be announced.

NEW! Planning for Medical School
Are you considering or planning on going to medical school? Whether you are still trying to decide on medical school, or even if you have made a firm decision to go for it, this new online workshop can help. You can complete the workshop individually from campus or home, and at your own pace, in approximately 2 - 3 hours. The workshop is customizable depending on what stage you are at in the preparation process.
After you complete the "Planning for Medical School" online workshop, you are eligible to attend the "Action Plan Clinic", where you will receive coaching and tips from a Health Careers Center career consultant, in a small group format.
Note: This workshop is currently available only to U of M Twin Cities students as a pilot project. Our pilot period is expected to end in September 2008. We anticipate that this online workshop will be offered to non-UMTC students after this date.

Step 2: Action Plan Clinic (small group, in-person consultation)
Register for an "Action Plan Clinic". Bring a printed copy of your completed action plan to this small-group session. Advance registration for this session and completion of the Planning for Medical School workshop are required. (Currently available only to U of M Twin Cities students.)

Dental Hygiene Information Sessions
This informative session answers any questions regarding the dental hygiene program. We discuss the dental hygiene major, course pre-requisites, the program curriculum, transfer coursework, and the application process. Sessions are one hour in length.
Dental School Advising Sessions
Learn about the Dentistry program at the University of Minnesota at this in-depth information and advising session. Receive individualized advising on getting started towards this career path. This session is 1.5 hours long. This session includes: a 30-minute presentation about the DDS application process and information on becoming a qualified candidate; a 30-minute question and answer advising session; and a 30-minute tour of the Dental School. Bring copies of your transcripts with you for the question and answer time!
Healthcare Administration (MHA) Information Sessions

Nursing (BSN) Information Sessions
This group information session will answer many of your questions about the nursing program. During the session, we talk about the nursing major, prerequisite courses, transfer coursework, and the application process. This session will only discuss and review the BSN program. Bring your questions!
Nursing (MN) Information Sessions
These information sesssions focus on the Master of Nursing (MN) program, which is geared for those individuals with recognized baccalaureate degrees in areas other than nursing and wish to become registered nurses. All MN Information Sessions will be held in 4-180 Weaver-Densford Hall. Occupational Therapy: First Steps to Occupational Therapy
Explore occupational therapy as a career choice at these sessions. The session includes a definition of occupational therapy, career outlook, career preparation, options for health careers and course planning strategies. Pharmacy Information Sessions
