HCI Summer Edition, Health Careers Center at the University of Minnesota

Health Career Investigators (HCI)
2009 Summer Edition

Health Career Investigators (HCI) is hosted by the Health Careers Center at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. It is a three day, hands-on, health careers exploration experience for high school students. During HCI, students will have the chance to "try on" different health careers and learn the different roles of health professionals. Students will discover the academic background, personal skills and qualities necessary to be a dentist, physical therapist, medical doctor and many other health care professions. As a Health Career Investigator, students will play an active role in learning about health careers that require a baccalaureate degree and/or advanced professional school degree.

If you are a high school student who is motivated, engaged and pursuing a college prep track with rigorous math and science courses, HCI is for you!

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can attend?
HCI is open to any high school student who will be entering grades 9-12 and has a strong GPA (3.0 minimum). Ideal applicants are high school students who are taking college prep classes, upper-level math and science courses, and plan to apply to a four-year college/university. Last year, HCI had students from over 21 high schools. Students who attended HCI came alone, with siblings, with classmates, and with friends. HCI is a fun and welcoming program where you can meet new people and make new friends.

When will I find out if I have been accepted into an HCI session?
We will be reviewing applications in mid-May and notifying all applicants by email regarding their application status.

What are the hours of the program?
HCI is a three day program which starts at 8:00 a.m. each day and will end by 3:30/4:00 p.m.

Can I attend more than one session?

No. You would only want to attend one of the HCI three-day sessions, since they are basically the same.

Can I apply for more than one session?
Yes. We encourage you to apply for both HCI sessions. That way if one of the sessions is full, you are more likely to get into the other session.

What kinds of things will I be doing during these two days?
To see a tentative outline of a three day HCI session, click here (schedule to come soon)!

Are there overnight accommodations?

No. You are responsible for any overnight accommodations. The Radisson University Hotel is located across the street from Moos Health Sciences Tower. The  Days Inn Minneapolis/University of Minnesota is about four blocks away from Moos Health Sciences Tower and the Holiday Inn Metrodome is located across the Mississippi River, on the west bank of campus (approximately 3/4 mile away).

Can my parent or guardian attend the program as well?
I’m sure we would enjoy your parents if we had the chance to spend time with them. However, your parents are not able to attend the HCI program with you.  The programs are intended for a high school audience and we have limited space in some of the labs and areas of campus that we visit. If your parent will be waiting for you on campus until the HCI program is finished, they are welcome to spend time on campus. We are able to recommend coffee shops or fun places on campus (Coffman Memorial Union) where they could work from their computer or simply enjoy the campus.

Where is the program held?
The program is held at the Health Careers Center, University of Minnesota. The Health Careers Center is in Moos Health Sciences Tower on the East bank of the Minneapolis campus. Prior to your HCI session you will receive directions and detailed information about transportation and parking options.

Who should I contact with questions?
Contact the Health Careers Center by calling 612-624-6767 or emailing hcc@umn.edu.
