HIPAA Training

Q: What is HIPAA?

A: In 1996, Congress passed the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, commonly referred to as HIPAA. One purpose of the act was to facilitate patients' transfer of health insurance when they changed jobs. The issue of protecting the privacy of health information emerged as a factor in transferring that data. The HIPAA privacy regulations present standards to protect the privacy and security of individual health information and require health care organizations to create policies and procedures to implement the HIPAA regulations.

Q: Why do I have to complete HIPAA training?

A: The federal government has mandated that affected workforce members must be trained on the HIPAA regulations and University policies and procedures. In the Academic Health Center all AHC faculty, staff, and students, except those in the College of Veterinary Medicine, RAR, AHC Comparative Medicine and certain adjunct faculty members complete the HIPAA training. HIPAA also affects areas outside of the AHC. The Privacy Office, with the assistance of the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost, has identified individuals in the University community who may have contact with protected health information and must complete HIPAA training.

Q: What and who is my privacy coordinator?

A: Privacy coordinators have been designated to help facilitate training in identified areas, implement relevant policies and procedures, and answer any questions regarding HIPAA. Find your privacy coordinator.

Q: How do I access training?

A: All University employees and students will enter training through the "MyU" portal, http://www.myu.umn.edu. Step-by-step instructions on how to access the video and other online HIPAA courses.

Q: How can I resume and complete a training session?

A: If you choose to quit the training in the middle of a course that is in WebCT, you can log into the portal and go back into the course you would like to continue. Select the "Resume Course" button in the upper navigation to get back to the page you were on.

Q: Why haven't I received an email confirming that I completed the course?

A: Please be patient. It takes approximately 4 hours - sometimes longer for the system to be refreshed because there are over 60,000 courses to update. . You will receive an email confirming your completion of the course. Print out the confirmation for your records. Your completion of the courses will be tracked electronically.
