HIPAA in Research

As one of the largest publicly funded institutions, the breadth of research activities being conducted at the University of Minnesota is understandably significant. The University will strive to comply at all times with the rules governing the use or disclosure of individual health information for research purposes. These rules include the federal regulations under HIPAA and Minnesota state law to the extent state law provisions are more protective of individuals’ privacy rights in research settings.

The University Research Policy is under review for approval.

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) assures that appropriate steps are taken to protect the rights and welfare of humans participating as subjects in the research. This site contains information on special research topics, resources for researchers, and assistance with the IRB process.

The National Institutes of Health provides detailed information on the HIPAA Privacy rule for the research community.
