HIPAA Privacy Training
Since 2003, identified faculty, staff, students, and volunteers have been required to complete training regarding the privacy of health information.
As part of the University’s ongoing commitment to comply with the HIPAA Privacy & Security Regulations, every University of Minnesota student, faculty member, researcher, and staff person who may have access to protected health information (PHI) and/or electronic protected health information (ePHI) must complete one or more online courses about privacy and data security. The University's procedure, Providing Training and Education on Privacy of Health Information, provides additional information on training requirements.
The University's HIPAA Privacy Training consists of a total of three courses and include:
- Introduction to HIPAA Privacy and Security Video (video format)
- Online HIPAA Courses accessible through the portal:

- Privacy and Confidentiality in Research
- Privacy and Confidentiality in the Clinical Setting
The training requirements mandated by the HIPAA Security Rule have been incorporated into the University-wide Public Jobs: Private Data Training Program. For more information, go to Public Jobs: Private Data security training.
PLEASE NOTE: The Safeguading PHI in Computers Course will be phased out upon the 2006 rollout of the Public Jobs: Private Data Training Program
How to access training
All University employees and students can enter training through the "MyU" portal at http://www.myu.umn.edu.
Alternative formats for training materials are available. Please contact the Privacy & Security Office at 612-624-7447.
Technical Requirements
1. The Introduction to HIPAA Privacy and Security Video requires QuickTime or RealVideo web browser plug-in be installed on your computer.

2. The other Privacy courses will be in WebCT VISTA, you need to make sure that your computer work station is set up correctly so that you can complete the training.
