Using Controlled Substances

Everyone at the University of Minnesota using controlled substances for research and teaching must follow Policy 2.1.4 - Using Controlled Substances for Research.

Each Unit (usually a department, but sometimes a different administrative structure) must appoint a Unit Registrant who will be the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registrant. Each laboratory within a Unit must appoint a Location Registrant who will obtain a Minnesota Board of Pharmacy (MNBP) registration and be responsible for the controlled substances at that location. The individuals who use controlled substances for research and teaching are called Authorized Users. Everyone who has any role in controlled substances use for research or teaching must sign the Authorized Users Signature Log.

Training

It is recommended that everyone who does any function with controlled substances attend the one-hour training offered several times each year. If no session is currently scheduled, send an email to marqu005@umn.edu to request notification when a session is scheduled.

Report of Theft or Loss of Controlled Substances

If you suspect a theft, immmediately notify the U of M Police, Unit Registrant and the Office of Regulatory Affairs. The DEA requires that theft or loss of controlled substances is reported on DEA Form 106 Report of Theft or Loss of Controlled Substances. Send a copy of Form 106 to the Office of Regulatory Affairs.
