Pre-Doctoral Clinical and Translational Research Program Summer Fellowship

PRE-DOCTORAL CLINICAL AND TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH PROGRAM
2007 SUMMER FELLOWSHIP
University of Minnesota Academic Health Center

Program Description

A shortage of clinical investigators spans all health professions. The growing chasm between research opportunities and numbers of trained clinical researchers has been recognized and documented through numerous reports.  While various existing programs provide sound training for post-doctoral fellows and young faculty, they do not address pipeline issues of stimulating interest in and providing initial clinical research training to pre-doctoral students of medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, or other critical allied health clinical research disciplines.

The Academic Health Center Office of Clinical Research is therefore pleased to announce the availability of paid fellowships and training in clinical and translational research for pre-doctoral AHC students.  Applications will be reviewed by a multidisciplinary committee, consisting of representatives from all AHC colleges/schools.

The program will consist of an 8-10 week summer fellowship, beginning mid-June, 2007.  During this time, fellows will work with established investigators on an ongoing clinical or translational research project.  Applicants will be matched with mentors based on the applicant’s needs and interests.  Small group weekly seminars will also be held, focusing on research ethics, good clinical practice, grant writing, and the responsible conduct of research.

Eligibility

Anyone currently completing his/her doctoral degree in any program of the AHC is eligible.

Benefits

Summer fellows will receive a weekly stipend of approximately $430.  Travel funds of up to $750 will also be available for fellows who present their projects at a regional or national meeting within one year of the fellowship.

Funds Available

Funding is available for twelve summer fellowships.
