Burroughs Wellcome Fund

Sponsor: Burroughs Wellcome Fund
Award: 2006 Career Awards in the Biomedical Sciences
Amount/Duration: $500,000 (five years)
Number of Projects to be Awarded: 20
Deadline: Oct. 3, 2005

Description: This award helps to foster the development and productivity of biomedical researchers who are early in their careers and to help them make the critical transition to becoming independent investigators. The awards provide support to help bridge advanced postdoctoral training and the first three years of faculty service. Approximately half of the awards will go to researchers with a Ph.D., and half to those with an M.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. Researchers may be working in any of the basic biomedical sciences. Applications are encouraged from M.D.s, M.D.-Ph.D.s, underrepresented minorities, women, and individuals working in informatics or reproductive science.

Eligibility: All recipients must have completed at least one year of postdoctoral training (and no more than four years). The award provides one to two years of postdoctoral support for awardees and the remaining support (five years total) during the faculty appointment. Award recipients must devote at least 80 percent of their time to research-related activities. Current faculty, or those who will be appointed before Oct. 2, 2006, are not eligible.

Nominations Process: Six (possibly ten) nominations are permitted per institution. Nominations (by faculty members) or preliminary proposals by applicants themselves should be 1-2 pages in length and describe why the nominee deserves the award and what research will be performed during the award period. A curriculum vitae should also be included. Nominating materials should be sent electronically to Mark Paller (palle001@umn.edu) , Assistant Vice President for Research, AHC, before Aug. 15, 2005. A committee of faculty members will screen applications if there are more than six potential applications.
