What types of inventions am I looking for?

  • New materials including organisms, mouse models, cells lines, proteins, RNA/DNA, antibodies and other cellular components and their derivatives that others would want to purchase
  • Novel compounds that have unique attributes – knowing we’ll need to get animal/human data for the patent
  • Drugs (on or off patent) with a new dose, new use, or new method of delivery – again knowing we’ll need to get animal/human data for the patent
  • Original designs, drawings, or prototypes of medical devices
  • Clinical data and databases that others would want to purchase

What am I going to ask if you call me about an invention?

  • Has it been published?
  • Who funded it? Are there any strings attached?
  • Who came up with the original ideas for the invention?
  • Who is the customer for the end product?
  • What is the market for the product?
  • What are your next steps for the invention?

What happens next?

  • We work together to submit an electronic invention disclosure to Patents & Technology Marketing (PTM)
  • A PTM licensing associate is assigned the case and evaluates the invention for the U of MN
  • PTM may:
    • File for a patent or decide it is a proprietary material or copyright that the U wants to market
    • Ask you to resubmit once it is developed further
    • In certain circumstances, PTM will waive an invention back to you as an individual

Can you come and talk at our faculty meeting?

Yes, here are some sample presentation topics:

  • Do I have an invention in my lab?
  • CDAs, MTAs, and Licenses: Agreement Overview
  • How to Protect Your Ideas (Lab Notebooks, Disclosure Dates, etc…)
  • Intellectual Property Primer
