NEIGHBORHOOD-BASED RESEARCH POSITION 
GRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANT

The African American Action Committee (AAAC) is a 
newly formed organization of Brooklyn Park African
 American homeowners, small business owners, and 
tenants. AAAC was formed to organize and empower 
the disadvantaged people of color living in the 
Northwest Suburbs of Brooklyn Park.  

The AAAC is seeking a graduate student research 
assistant to research employment disparities and 
economic development opportunities for Africans 
and African-Americans in Brooklyn Park.   The 2000
 census shows that African Americans make up14.33%
 of the population in Brooklyn Park. However, the 
city employs only 1.67% African Americans. The 
City also contracts for many services that could 
be fulfilled by minority contractors.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The graduate student researcher 
will be responsible for the following: 1) document
 current employment of people of color by local 
governments serving Brooklyn Park; 2) document 
minority contracting by local government; 3) 
review hiring and contracting practices 4) 
complete a final research report to present the 
findings from this research and identify options 
for improving employment and contracting of people
 of color in Brooklyn Park. 

QUALIFICATIONS:
1.	Registered graduate student for the 
duration of the Fall 2005 semester
2.	Strong communication skills
3.	Knowledge of equal opportunity hiring and 
contracting practices preferred 
4.	Good basic research and investigative 
abilities
5.	Familiarity with Brooklyn Park or 
Northwest suburbs desirable.  

SALARY & HOURS:  $15.25/ hour, 195 hours total

DURATION & APPOINTMENT:  	Fall 2005, 
beginning in September 2005
