Graduate Research Assistant
Case-Control Study of Risk Factors for Melanoma
Division of Epidemiology & Community Health

Job Description
The Division of Epidemiology and Community 
Health in the School of Public Health seeks a 
50% time Graduate Research Assistant  for the 
Skin Health Study, a case-control study of risk 
factors for melanoma.  Job duties include 1) 
conducting and tracking mailings to subjects for 
collection of buccal cells,  2) making reminder 
calls to study participants, 3) coding and entry 
of residential history data, 4) serving as 
liaison between the Minnesota Cancer 
Surveillance System (Minnesota Department of 
Health), Data Collection Support Services 
(Division of Epidemiology), research 
laboratories (University of New Mexico), Mayo 
Clinic, and University of Minnesota 
investigators, 5) conducting literature 
reviews,  6) maintaining filing systems for 
study activities and materials, and 7) assisting 
with preparation of study protocols, procedures 
and materials and other study related 
activities, as needed.  

Qualifications
The successful candidate must be a doctoral or 
second year master's degree student in good 
standing at the University of Minnesota, 
preferably with an interest in cancer 
epidemiology and control.  Preference will be 
given to students with experience in data 
collection and subject contact, data management, 
and/or research project coordination, with 
excellent organizational skills and attention to 
detail.  Familiarity with statistical software 
and database programs is helpful.  

Start Date:  August 15th, 2007  
Rate, Percent Position, Duration of Position:

Rate of pay will be based on degree status, 50% 
equivalent position, renewable pending funding 
and performance each semester for up to one year 
or longer.  The primary location of the position 
is in the West Bank Office Building.
