The Statistical Research Associate (SRA) will 
join the Statistical Center for HIV/AIDS Research 
and Prevention (SCHARP). SCHARP is the 
statistical coordinating center for the HIV 
Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN), which is an 
international collaboration of scientists and 
educators searching for an effective and safe HIV 
vaccine. The HVTN’s mission is to facilitate the 
process of testing preventive vaccines against 
HIV/AIDS. The organization conducts all phases of 
clinical trials from evaluating experimental 
vaccines for safety and the ability to stimulate 
immune responses, to testing vaccine efficacy.  

The SRA will provide statistical support, which 
may include reviewing protocol drafts, 
participation on the protocol development team, 
and assisting the protocol lead statistician in 
the design of appropriate analyses. The SRA will 
write statistical analysis plans for protocols 
and complete the analysis. S/he will also work on 
data analysis of HIV/AIDS research projects.  
S/he exercises judgment with defined practices 
and policies.  

DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES: 
• Review protocol drafts and participate on the 
protocol development team. 
• Write or confirm statistical considerations for 
protocol (sample size/power). 
• Working alone or with the lead protocol 
statistician, design appropriate analyses, write 
statistical analysis plans, and provide 
statistical analysis of project data and research 
projects. 
• Provide statistical consultation for research 
projects. 
• Assist principal investigators in the design of 
appropriate analyses. 
• Review case report forms. 
• Participate in protocol team conference calls 
and meetings. 
• Assist in the development of quality assurance 
procedures for on-going data collection and 
analysis. 
• Prepare written summaries and table of results 
for use in project reports, scientific papers, 
Data and Safety Monitoring Board meetings, and 
grant applications. 
• Document and archive statistical documents. 
• Develop and evaluate new statistical software. 
• Coordinate the production of statistical 
reports. 
• Perform other responsibilities as required.  

QUALIFICATIONS:
A master’s degree in statistics or biostatistics 
and a minimum of one year (SRA II) or three years 
(SRA III) of related experience is required.  
Applicants must have a background in statistical 
computing and proficiency with the statistical 
package SAS, as well as with the development of 
statistical programs and software. Strong oral 
and written communication skills are essential.
