ABOUT US
Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, home of 
three Nobel laureates, is an independent, 
nonprofit research institution dedicated to the 
development and advancement of biomedical 
research to eliminate cancer and other 
potentially fatal diseases. SCHARP is part of the 
Vaccine and Infectious Disease Institute (VIDI), 
an interdisciplinary institute within Fred 
Hutchinson Cancer Research Center that was 
created in an effort to develop and implement 
prevention strategies for globally important 
infectious diseases, including HIV, malaria, and 
the viruses and bacteria that can result in 
cancer. 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
We are seeking a master’s-level biostatistician 
to provide statistical support within the 
Statistical Center for HIV/AIDS Research & 
Prevention (SCHARP). SCHARP currently provides 
statistics and data management services for the 
following clinical trial networks and consortia:  
HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN), HIV Prevention 
Trials Network (HPTN), Microbicide Trials Network 
(MTN), Collaboration for AIDS Vaccine Discovery 
(CAVD), International Maternal Pediatric 
Adolescent AIDS Clinical Trials (IMPAACT), and 
the Center for HIV-AIDS Vaccine Immunology 
(CHAVI). SCHARP also collaborates and engages in 
joint research with the Chinese Center for 
Disease Control (China CDC), Seattle Biomedical 
Research Institute (SBRI), PATH, University of 
Washington, and the Institute for Systems Biology 
(ISB). 

MAJOR DUTIES
The Statistical Research Associate will work at 
an independent level to provide statistical 
support and will spend the majority of work time 
designing, developing, coordinating and 
performing statistical aspects of study design, 
implementation, and statistical analyses.  

Duties may include some or all of the following:
• Participate in protocol team conference calls 
and meetings.
• Review protocol drafts.
• Either write or confirm statistical 
considerations in protocol (sample size/power).
• Assist principal investigators in the design of 
appropriate analyses.
• Write statistical analysis plans. 
• Review case report forms.
• Assist in the development of quality assurance 
procedures for on-going data collection and 
analysis.
• Provide statistical analysis of project data.
• Prepare written summaries and tables of results 
for use in project reports, scientific papers, 
Data and Safety Monitoring Board meetings, and 
grant applications.
• Document and archive statistical documents.
• Develop and evaluate new statistical software. 
• Provide statistical consultation for research 
projects.
• Coordinate production of statistical reports.
• Represent statistical unit at the 
organizational meetings for SCHARP.
• Represent project at scientific meetings.
• Give oral presentations of study results.
• Assist other statistical research associates 
with statistical analyses.
• Perform other responsibilities as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree in Statistics or Biostatistics 
and a minimum of 3 years of related experience. 
Background in statistical computing. Proficiency 
with the statistical package SAS and/or R. 
Experience in the development of statistical 
programs and software. Strong oral and written 
communication skills.
