The Program in Health Disparities Research at the 
University of Minnesota is currently seeking a full 
time Research Counselor to work on a study 
conducted through the Department of Medicine. The 
applicant will provide counseling for a four-year 
clinical trial targeting smoking behavior change. 
Specifically, the goal of the study is to increase 
the adoption of home smoking restrictions. The 
research will be conducted during visits to 
participant's homes to enroll, provide brief 
counseling intervention and document smoking 
status. The counselor will conduct participant 
telephone screenings, on-site enrollment including 
the completion of the informed consent and baseline 
questionnaires and will provide brief counseling to 
participant.  

The applicant may also have the opportunity to 
train and supervise counseling staff and must be 
able to work with a team that includes the study 
PI, community coordinator, study collaborating 
physicians and students.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The qualifications for the position are a BA/BS in 
health sciences related area and 2 years of 
relevant clinical or counseling experience or 
combination of education/experience to total 6 
years. Other preferred qualifications include, 
proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel, 
experience working with underserved communities, 
experience in the provision of Motivational 
Interviewing (counseling style), prior research 
experience, prior experience in training and/or 
staff supervision, knowledge of smoking cessation, 
and ability to work flexible evening hours as 
needed.
