Bioethics Research Assistant

The incumbent will serve as a research assistant 
(RA) for the bioethics research program at Mayo 
Clinic Rochester, Minnesota. Research projects 
will encompass both empirical studies and 
bioethics work that is more conceptual in nature. 
Projects include ethical, social, and legal 
dimensions of the genomic sciences and human 
subjects research, as well as research topics 
relevant to decision making and innovation in 
clinical medicine, such as end-of-life care and 
complementary & alternative medicine. 

Initial responsibilities will be in support of 
the NIH-funded project: "Translating Addiction 
Genomics Research into Clinical Practice
—Examining Ethics and Policy" (PI: Barbara 
Koenig).

The incumbent will assist with carrying out and 
coordinating research on specific bioethics 
topics. This includes journal screening, 
literature and web-based searches, document 
retrieval, and preparation of detailed summaries 
of project meetings. For particular projects, 
under the supervision of the program manager and 
a post-doctoral research fellow, the RA assists 
with submission of grant applications, human 
subjects regulatory requirements, correspondence 
with study subjects, scheduling and (possibly) 
conducting research interviews, working with 
recording equipment, establishing and maintaining 
research databases, and filing of articles and 
research data. The RA attends project meetings in 
order to keep minutes of progress and needed 
action items, and aids in producing reports and 
manuscripts. The RA will work closely with the 
program manager and administrative assistant in 
arranging research meetings and scheduling 
conference calls. Based on experience, the RA may 
conduct qualitative interviews with research 
subjects.

QUALIFICATIONS: 
Candidates should have a bachelor’s or master’s 
degree and have demonstrated interest and 
experience in bioethics (for example, through 
coursework and research). Education/experience in 
the social sciences (including data management 
and/or interviewing) is preferred. Must possess 
excellent written and oral communication skills. 
Candidates should have familiarity with online 
literature databases (e.g., Medline) and must 
have excellent computer and library research 
skills.
