Job Description:
The American Indian and Alaska Native Research 
Program (AIANRP), UCLA Center for Health Policy 
Research, is currently seeking a graduate 
student researcher (GSR) to serve as Project 
Manager for a research project titled, “American 
Indian Cancer Prevention: Turning Knowledge into 
Action.” This study builds on the Center’s 
Health DATA Program. The study proposes to 
provide breast cancer epidemiologic data through 
user-friendly mechanisms and to develop and 
support local infrastructures and capacities 
focusing on breast health.  The target 
population is Southern California tribes, and 
tribal and urban Indian organizations. This 
project will evaluate the effects of exposure to 
the intervention at the individual, cohort and 
community level. 

Duties will include the research intervention 
and evaluation as well as primary responsibility 
for project management.  Specific duties may 
include: assisting in the development of social 
marketing curricula and evaluation tools; 
community relations, recruitment and retention 
of participants, training, planning and 
assisting in analysis; writing reports, 
manuscript preparation, assisting in grant 
proposals; coordination of consultant’s work, 
supervising an undergraduate research assistant, 
and general AIANRP maintenance.

Qualifications:
Candidates must be interested in working toward 
the improvement of the health of AIAN.  Graduate 
student required.  Public health, education, or 
related social or behavioral science field 
preferred.  Excellent communication and writing 
skills.  Strong ability and expectation to work 
independently. Strong organizational skills to 
manage competing priorities and deadlines, with 
attention to time management.  Must be attentive 
to detail.  Limited regional travel required.  
Experience in evaluation studies required, and 
previous experience conducting trainings 
preferred.  Good PC computer skills a must, and 
experience working in Microsoft Office required.

Position and Compensation:

10 - 20 hours per week.  Some flexibility in 
setting up work schedule/space to accommodate 
needs of students.  Compensation dependent upon 
qualifications and experience. As this is a GSR 
classification, appropriate student fees and 
remissions will be provided.
