Research Assistant (two positions)

Provide assistance to an MCH faculty member and 
to colleagues at the Minnesota Department of 
Health (MDH). 

There are two separate positions:  one is 
related to perinatal (pregnancy and postpartum) 
health and the other is related to children with 
special health needs.  For both positions, 
some travel to the St. Paul MDH site may be 
required; for the children with special health 
needs position, it is possible that travel to 
various clinic sites may also be required.

The perinatal health position will be supervised 
by Dr. Wendy Hellerstedt and the children with 
special health needs position will be supervised 
by Dr. Joan Patterson.

For the children with special health needs 
position, the duties will likely include 
data coding, data entry, and analysis. 

For both positions, the duties will include:
1. Interpretation of data output;
2. Organization of research materials and 
conduct of literature searches; and 
3. Preparation of written documentation of data, 
including factsheets, slides, tables, and graphs.
	
Qualifications:	
1.  The funding requires that the student must 
be enrolled for at least 6 credits as an MCH 
student in the fall semester and, if renewed, 
enrolled as an MCH student for at least 6 
credits  in the spring semester.
2.  Must be a US citizen.
3.  Must be a confident and good writer, 
stylistically and grammatically.
4.  Must be comfortable interpreting data; a 
strong preference will be given to second year 
or advanced students who have taken the 
evaluation class as well as other data 
management/skills courses.
5.  For the children with special health needs 
position, the ability to conduct simple analyses 
(preferably using SAS), will be necessary.  It 
is strongly preferred that the student have some 
analyses background beyond the classroom, 
although students who have had only classroom 
training will be considered.  Such skills would 
also be preferable for the perinatal health 
position.

Duration:	August 30, 2004 - Jan. 12, 2005 
(fall semester), with possible extension for 
spring semester.
Hours:	25% (10 hours/week to be arranged)
Location: 1300 South Second Street, Suite 300 
(WBOB), with possible other clinic or MDH sites
Pay Rate: Current hourly pay rates for graduate 
assistants in the School of Public Health are:
	$13.85 for those with bachelor’s degrees
	$18.46 for those with master’s degrees
	$23.07 for those with doctoral degrees
